The Garden’s Partial Care (PC), also called a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), offers hospital-level structure without an overnight stay, making it the most intensive level of care on campus, except for inpatient treatment. Clients spend several hours on site most weekdays for therapy, skill-building, and psychiatric check-ins, then return home or to sober living each evening.

Small cohorts of eight to ten participants preserve confidentiality while encouraging peer connection and real-time practice of coping skills. PHP in New Jersey bridges the gap between inpatient care and an Intensive Outpatient Program, delivering the structure needed for lasting change without disrupting daily life.

Recovery Support & Transition

Discharge planning begins on day one, ensuring that nobody leaves PC without a clear roadmap. As progress is made, clinicians coordinate a step-down to an Intensive Outpatient Program or standard outpatient care, ensuring that the next level of care aligns with the client’s growing independence.

Alumni gatherings, mentorship events, and referrals to community support groups—such as 12-Step, SMART Recovery, or local wellness collectives—extend accountability beyond campus walls. [2]

For those who need structured housing, the team connects clients to reputable sober-living partners, and case managers remain available to link each graduate with therapy sessions, medication management, or additional resources that safeguard long-term recovery.

How long is a PHP stay?

What makes PC different from IOP?

Does PHP treat only alcohol?

Not at all. While some clients do enter the program for PHP alcohol rehab, The Garden’s partial hospitalization program handles a full range of substance use disorders—opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants, and even polysubstance combinations. [3]

Clinicians specialize in dual diagnosis care, meaning anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health challenges are treated right alongside addiction. [4] Addressing everything together strengthens recovery and lowers the risk of relapse.

Can family visit or join therapy?

Yes. Family therapy and psychoeducational workshops are cornerstones of the program. Loved ones learn about the science of addiction, boundary-setting, and communication strategies so they can become active allies in recovery. Sessions may take place in person or via secure telehealth to accommodate out-of-town relatives. Welcoming families into the process often strengthens the client’s support system and accelerates the healing process. [5]

Does insurance cover PHP in New Jersey?

Most private insurers and New Jersey Medicaid classify a partial hospitalization program in New Jersey as medically necessary when clinical criteria are met. Coverage typically includes daily therapy sessions, psychiatric services, and laboratory testing. Before admission, The Garden’s admissions team verifies each policy, identifies out-of-network benefits, and outlines any copays or deductibles so families understand financial responsibilities before the first therapy hour begins.

Who decides whether PC or another level of care is appropriate?

A collaborative team of licensed therapists, psychiatric providers, and medical professionals reviews each incoming client’s full picture—substance use history, mental and physical health, living situation, and support network. Drawing on established placement guidelines, they determine whether a Partial Care Program, Intensive Outpatient Program, or inpatient treatment offers the safest and most effective path forward. What happens after detox?

Upon receiving medical clearance, clients enter The Garden’s evidence-based programs—Partial Care, Intensive Outpatient, or Standard Outpatient—to develop relapse-prevention skills and address underlying behavioral health concerns.
